Choosing a toy
Why the toy matters more than the price
Toys do a serious job. Something as simple as a set of wooden blocks or a shape puzzle is how a small child practises cognitive and physical skills, and the right toy at the right age gets played with for years rather than a fortnight.
Choosing by age
Age does most of the choosing, and not for the reason people expect. An age line on a toy is usually about safety, not ability: small parts, weight limits and how steady a child is on their feet.
- Around 10 to 24 months. First wheels. A three-wheeled balance bike lets a new walker move under their own steam while the balance is still arriving.
- Two to six. Big physical play and pretend play together: a folding slide, a trampoline with a support handle, a pedal tractor with a trailer to load, and a wooden kitchen where dinner gets served whether you want it or not.
- Three and up. Building and sorting. An activity table with a block baseplate on one side and a smooth desk on the other keeps working long after the blocks phase, and the bookshelf teaches tidying by making it reachable.
- Five to twelve. Wheels with speed attached, which is where the helmet and pads set earns its place.

Start with the age, not the picture
Every product page on this site carries the age range and, where there is one, the weight limit the maker publishes. Those two numbers narrow a shortlist faster than anything else: the balance bike is for 10 to 24 months, the slide for two to six, the trampoline for three and up at 25 kg maximum, and the helmet and pads set for five to twelve.
Then the space
Measure before you order. The slide is 159 x 96 cm on the floor and 101 cm tall, the toy kitchen is 30 x 19 x 42 cm, the bookshelf is 86 x 26.5 x 78 cm and the trampoline mat is 91.5 cm across. Anything a child climbs on or bounces on wants clear space around it, not just its own footprint.
Indoors, outdoors, or both
The slide and the trampoline are built for either and fold away when the room needs to be a room. The pedal tractor is happiest outdoors on grass or a path. The kitchen, bookshelf and activity table are indoor furniture.
What needs assembling
Most of it, briefly. The toy kitchen takes about ten minutes, the balance bike about two, the slide sets up without tools, and the bookshelf and activity table are a short session with the illustrated instructions. The bookshelf also comes with anti-toppling fittings, which are worth using rather than putting in a drawer.
Mind the small parts
The activity table comes with 100 building blocks and is not for children under 36 months, and the trampoline carries the same warning. Where a maker requires adult supervision, that requirement is part of the product rather than a formality.
